“Independence” day is my least favorite capitalist ‘holiday’. A country founded on genocide where only a few can be ‘free’ and the majority suffer from state-imposed / structural violence daily doesn’t exactly lead me to feel ‘patriotic’ and it never has. Patriotism breeds fascism and the day itself feels very dark to me. That said, skipping the fourth feels good personally. Yesterday I took myself on a few hour long bike ride, painted away the evening, and listened to the teachings of Amma. Humility, she says, is what will free us from violence and war. It struck me how accurate that felt to me — and how difficult this is for many. What may inspire a daily practice of HUMILITY? How could humility be instilled in others who have gone down the deep end of ego-driven power?
