Here’s a post on the PSOAS a very HOT muscle in yoga!
I once made a zine about the psoas because it is a fascinating muscle — it stabilizes the core, keeps us upright, flexes our legs, allows us to dance, and run, and all the fun ways many of us are able to move. It’s also referred to as the seat of the soul – it is thought to communicate embodied wisdom. it is the first muscle to contract when we sense danger and relaxes when our nervous system perceives safety. It’s pretty freakin rad! Because of its many functions, it often gets tight, refers pain to the hips & low back, and can be tricky to locate.
Some massage therapists will aim to ‘release it’ via trigger point therapy. This is perhaps the most viable solution for immediate relief. Here are the trigger point locations. There’s also the option for clients to release it on their own via self-massage. This is the route I recommend as I prefer not to jab around in this highly sensitive region. That could change but right now, I’ll send you off with your demo & homework.
In terms of stretching, there are many arguments against stretching the psoas as it is likely a temporary solution to a ‘deeper’ issue. However many stretches in yoga can be utilized to begin to soften a tight psoas – though the effects may not last. I’m of the mindset that if it feels helpful and not harmful – go for it!!! Here are some poses to try!
